Monday 5 August

Today is Monday, the 5 August, in the Eighteenth Week of Ordinary Time.

The nuns of Mary, Queen of Apostles, sing the hymn Jesu dulcis mermoria.  Sweet is the very thought of Jesus;  giving true joy to the heart.  But sweeter than the sweetest honey, is his very Presence.

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew.

Jesus dismisses the crowds and then goes up the mountain to pray.  How do Jesus’ actions here make you feel?  He creates space for himself at the end of a very full day, do you find this a challenge?

There is a freedom about Jesus in this and throughout the gospels.  His followers would talk of him even walking on water and issuing commands to the wind.  How do you understand such talk about Jesus?

As you listen again, what are you noticing about Jesus and how he moves through life?

Peter experiences a partial success and then a degree of failure and he calls out, “Lord, save me!”  As you face the winds and waves of your life, what is your cry to God?
