Thursday 2 May | St Athanasius

Today is Thursday the 2 May, the feast of St Athanasius in the second week of Easter.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo sing Ngaza Ngambona: ‘They are blessed who keep his commandments; they will have their eternal place.  Come in, all of you, so that you may be happy and be able to say, I’ve seen him on the cross, the one who loves me.  Teach me, Father, to love you, praise you and pray to you.’

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of John.

John the Baptist is talking about Jesus when he speaks of the one who comes from heaven, and the one whom God has sent. He is the Son whom the Father loves. To him the Father has entrusted all things. Let that thought sink in: that all is entrusted to Christ.

Dwell for a moment with the phrase, ‘Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life’. How might that life be being offered to you?

As you listen to these words again, recall that this is John the Baptist’s final witness to Jesus. Try to sense what he wishes to convey about him to his disciples.

And what is your own desire today? How might you need the gift of Christ’s spirit that He wishes to give without measure? Express now that desire, as a friend to a friend.
