Thursday 28 April 2022

Today is Thursday the 28th of April, in the second week of Easter.

The Kyiv Chamber Choir, sing the Creed: “I believe in one God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.” As I start this prayer today, can I join in with this strong, almost exuberant expression of faith? Can I begin by declaring my faith in my God, my creator, my heavenly Father?

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of John.

John 3:31-36

The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.

Today’s passage focuses on “ the one who comes from above”. Think for a moment about “this one who comes from above”…

“He speaks the words of God… he gives the Spirit without measure”. Sit with this image for a moment… how does it speak to you?

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life”. How deeply do you grasp this idea today?

Now listen as the passage is read again: what is God doing here?

Finally, see if you can bring together all the feelings that are welling up inside you after praying over this passage; can you turn them into a prayer to God?

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
