Friday 9 August

Today is Friday, the 9 August, in the Eighteenth Week of Ordinary Time.

The Community of Taizé sing “the Kingdom of God is justice and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.  Come, Lord, and open in us the gates of your kingdom.”

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew.

The bridegroom seems very harsh in this parable, yet we know that Jesus is not harsh.  So, what is he getting at?  What point is he trying to make in this parable of the Kingdom?

The wise bridesmaids take flasks of oil as well as their lamps and this is what makes the difference.  How does this metaphor speak to you in your context today?

As you listen again to Jesus telling this parable, imagine  how he is telling it.  Is he solemn?  Is there some humour?  What’s in his tone?

How do you want to respond to Jesus now?  Be honest, even if there is something you don’t like.
