Today is Friday the 14th of March, in the First Week of Lent.

The Community of Taizé sing Misericordias Domini.   ‘I will sing forever of the mercy of God.’

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew.

Are any of us worthy to come to God’s altar? Spend a moment of truth contemplating the gap between God who is perfect, and myself who am not.

But the Kingdom of heaven is not earned.  God delights in giving us the Kingdom.  It is a gift received in spite of not deserving it.  We are not to be afraid.  I don’t have to pretend to be good enough.  I can be myself before God.  I can be completely myself.

As I hear it again, might I hear in this gospel not condemnation but liberation?  It is not my work but God’s work in me.  Self-justification is a myth.  There is only God’s mercy and unending love.

What do I wish to say to God in the light of this gospel and my reflections?  What is God saying to me?
