Music: Opening of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater
The reading is from the Gospel of Luke.
Luke 2:34-35
Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed-- and a sword will pierce your own soul too."
One of the saddest things is a mother burying her own child, especially if the mother is witness to and shares the suffering. This is what tradition tells us happened on the way to Calvary. As she sees Jesus, Mary is surely asking herself, ‘was there anything in his life that prepared me for this’ or ‘was there anything I could have done to have prevented this?’ ‘What can I say to him?’
As I think about this scene, am I asking myself the same questions: ‘was there anything I could have done to have prevented this?’ ‘What can I say to him?’
Dearest Jesus. . .
