Today is Friday the 23rd of June, in the 11th week of Ordinary time.
Steffany Gretzinger sings, ‘More Precious Than Silver’.
Lord, You are more precious than silver
And Lord, You are more costly than gold
Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds
And nothing I desire compares with You
Lord, You are more precious than silver
And Lord, You are more costly than gold
Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds
And nothing I desire compares with You
Oh, who can weigh the volume of knowing You
And who could charge the worth of who You are?
Oh, who can count the blessing of loving You
And who could say just how great You are?
Oh, who can weigh the volume of knowing You
And who can charge the worth of who You are?
Oh, who could count the blessing of loving You
And who could say just how great You are?
Oh, who could say just how great You are?
Lord, You are more precious than silver
And Lord, You are more costly than gold
Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds
And nothing I desire compares with You
Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew.
Matthew 6:19-23
‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
‘The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
In today’s reading we hear Jesus’ words, ‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.’
We may name Jesus as our treasure, but the demands and temptations we encounter in life may at times overwhelm our desires to remain close to him.
What is your heart most engaged with or troubled by today?
Offer your thoughts to the Lord.
Jesus says, “Do not store up treasures on earth… but store up for yourselves treasure in heaven.”
Can you identify which treasure, if any, you are storing on earth?
What treasure do you imagine you are storing up in heaven?
As you listen to the reading again, notice which of Jesus’ instructions most stand out to you.
As you finish this time of prayer, turn your heart and your gaze towards the Lord and his light to spend some time just bathing in his presence. Let this time spent together be your treasure for today.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
