Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew.
Matthew 5:17-19
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
Jesus tells his Jewish audience that he is the fulfilment of the law and the prophets. What does this mean in your understanding? He tells us to live and teach the commandments ourselves. How do you respond to this? Is there a particular commandment of God that you most want to live by?
For some people, the thought of religious laws and commandments feels restricting and oppressive. But Jesus tells us that the greatest of the commandments is love. If you were in Jesus’ audience, what might you want to ask him about the law and the prophets?
Listen to the reading again. What strikes you as you listen? Allow those words or thoughts to take root in you and find a resting place.
Take some time to speak to Jesus in your heart. Perhaps there are questions, or something troubling or attracting you. Whatever it is, he is listening to what you want to say.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
