Wednesday 19 April 2023

Today is Wednesday the 19th of April, in the second week of Easter.

Steffany Gretzinger sings ‘Open My Eyes’.

As you listen, can you make these words your own prayer? Where in your life do you need your eyes opened to see the Lord today?

Open my eyes, Lord
I want to see Jesus
To reach out and touch him
And say that I love him
Open my ears, Lord
And help me to listen
Open my eyes, Lord
I want to see Jesus
Open my eyes, Lord
I want to see Jesus

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of John.

John 3:16-21

‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.’

This passage from scripture and particularly the first line, is quite well known. Can you recall a time when you’ve heard it?

How do you respond to this line and the promise and power of these words?

We hear that the Son did not come to condemn but to save.

What impact does this phrase have on you?

Have there been times when you have questioned this?

What is your response today?

Prayer may be compared to a time of resting in God’s light. In our imagination we often pray for the path to be illuminated by God. Can you think of times when this has been helpful for you? How did it feel?

In this passage, Jesus is speaking to Nicodemus under a literal cover of darkness. As we listen to it again, consider what part the image of light and darkness plays in your life?

‘But those who do what is true come to the light’. Take the opportunity now to be held in God’s presence.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
