Saturday 4 March 2023

Welcome to the Saturday Examen.

Take a few quiet moments to arrive with the Lord in prayer by sitting in a comfortable position.

Now take a moment to thank him for his presence with you during the past week.

In the quiet, begin to recall some of the events of your week, noticing those which have brought peace and those which have disturbed you.

Now, a line will be read from each of the Scriptures from each day of the past week, when our companions were Isaiah, Jonah, and Jesus.

As you listen to their words and stories afresh, notice which one most remains with you.

‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.’

‘so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.’

Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, ‘Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’ And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.

‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.’

‘For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’

Did one of these stand out to you as you listened?

Stay with these words as you continue to sit with the Lord, letting them be part of your prayer, letting them travel from your mind to your heart.

How are you feeling now? Peaceful? Challenged? Something else perhaps?

Share these feelings with the Lord.

As we near the end of this examen, talk with God about the coming week, your hope and fears perhaps, entrusting them into his care.

You have given all to me,
To You, Lord, I return it.
Everything is Yours,
Do with it what you will.
Give me only Your love and Your grace.
That is enough for me.
Amen.
