The Feast of St Andrew | Wednesday 30 November 2022

Today is Wednesday the 30th of November, the feast of Saint Andrew.

The monks of Pluscarden Abbey sing: Expectans expectavi Dominum: I waited and waited for the Lord, and he has looked upon me, he heard my cry.

Today’s reading is from St Paul’s letter to the Romans.

Rom 10:9-18

Because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, ‘No one who believes in him will be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’ But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed our message?’ So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.

But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have; for
‘Their voice has gone out to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.’

The season of Advent prepares us for the coming of the Lord, both at Christmas and towards the time when Jesus returns…

Today’s reading might be seen as a fanfare for His return, encouraging us to proclaim by believing in our hearts and confessing with our mouths the salvation that comes through Jesus Christ.

‘How beautiful are the feet who bring good news!’

Do you remember the beautiful feet that brought the good news of Jesus Christ to you?

Take a moment to give thanks to God for this person or people.

Perhaps the good news came to you as a gradual trickle over the years or maybe as a sudden revelation?

How has this message changed your life?

As you listen to the reading again, notice the energy and generosity of the gospel message, imagine also the sound of all the feet as they pound the earth at this moment right now, to proclaim the news about Jesus Christ.

Pray for anyone you know who whose voice is going out across the world to proclaim the news of God’s salvation.

Can you be open to the Lord in generosity of heart and with your voice today?

Where will your beautiful feet carry the good news today?

Ask the Lord to bless your feet and the paths they tread throughout this Advent season.
