The Feast of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus | Friday 29 July 2022

Today is Friday the 29th July, the feast of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus.

Steffany Gretzinger sings, ‘There Is None Like You’. Can you make these words your own as you enter into time with the Lord today?

There is none like You
No one else can touch my heart like You do
I could search for all eternity, Lord
And find, there is none like You
There is none like You, Jesus
No one else can touch my heart like You do
I could search for all eternity, Lord
And find, there is none like You
Your mercy flows like a river wide
And healing comes from Your hand
Suffering children are safe in Your arms
Oh Lord, there is none like You
There is none like You
No one else can touch my heart like You do
I could search for all eternity, Lord
And find, there is none like You
I could search for all eternity, Lord
And find, there is none like You

Today’s reading is from the gospel of Luke.

Luke 10:38-42

Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.’

This passage has provoked much debate over the years. There are different ways of interpreting it. Is Jesus saying that the contemplative life is superior to the active? Is he saying that Mary’s vocation is more than being a domestic help and that she has a right to take her place alongside his male disciples? What’s this passage saying to you?

How do feel about Martha in this scene? What do you want to say to her?

The tone of words can convey more than their content. Listen again and imagine the feel and the tone of the words spoken.

How might this scene play out? Can you imagine what might happen next? Talk to God as you see it unfold in your mind…

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
