Today is Wednesday the 13th of July, in the 15th week of Ordinary Time.
The choir of Royal Holloway sings, ‘The Mystery of God’, by Dan Locklair. How do you experience the mystery of God?
O THOU, in all thy might so far,
In all thy love so near,
Beyond the range of sun and star,
And yet beside us here,—
What heart can comprehend thy name,
Or searching, find thee out,
Who art within a quickening Flame,
A Presence round about?
Yet though I know thee but in part,
I ask not, Lord, for more:
Enough for me to know thou art,
To love thee and adore.
O sweeter than aught else besides,
The tender mystery
That like a veil of shadow hides
The Light I may not see!
And dearer than all things I know
Is childlike faith to me,
That makes the darkest way I go
An open path to thee.
Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew.
Matthew 11:25-27
At that time Jesus said, ‘I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
We enter the scene just after Jesus has firmly told the crowds that the good news he is offering is being rejected. Jesus turns to prayer. He turns to the one who will never reject him. As you watch, where do you find yourself wanting to be?
Jesus is thankful for those to whom the things of God have been revealed – those who welcome what he offers. How might it be to welcome what he offers?
As you listen again to the reading, listen as a little one to whom the Son chooses to reveal God.
All things have been handed over to Jesus. Sit with the thought that you too are given to him. Speak with him about this.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
