Today is Thursday the 27th
of January, in the third week of Ordinary time.
The Community of
Taizé sing Christe Lux Mundi: ‘O Christ, light of the world, whoever
follows you will have the light of life.’
Today’s reading is from the
Gospel of Mark.
Mark 4:21-25
He said to them, ‘Is
a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not
on the lampstand? For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor
is anything secret, except to come to light. Let anyone with ears to hear
listen!’ And he said to them, ‘Pay attention to what you hear; the measure
you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given
you. For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have
nothing, even what they have will be taken away.’
Jesus is speaking to the crowd about the
kingdom of God using images drawn from their ordinary life. The position of an oil
lamp in a darkened room where it can give the most light. The generous, or stingy,
measuring out of grain in a marketplace. What do these images stir up in you?
As you sit with these images – of precious
light, of measuring out and receiving – what is striking you or getting your
attention?
‘Take notice of what you are hearing,’ Jesus
says in today’s reading. It is an invitation to pay attention to the impact his
words have on us and our response to them. As you hear his words again, what do
you notice?
What is your response to this Jesus who
speaks in parables and who invites us to really listen? What have you heard
with the ears of your heart? Take some time now to speak and listen to him.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
