St John the Evangelist | Monday 27 December 2021

Today is Monday the 27 December, the feast of St John the Evangelist, in the season of Christmas.

The Sixteen Choir and Orchestra, directed by Harry Christophers, sing, “For unto us a child is born” from Handel’s Messiah.
As you listen, can you enter into the joy?

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of John.

John 20:2-8

Today is the feast day of St John the Evangelist. By tradition, the youngest Apostle and the writer of, perhaps, the most spiritual and symbolic of the gospels. Perhaps, given John’s expansive understanding of Jesus’ life, is it right that this reading of the Resurrection should be so close to the miraculous birth? How does this reading speak to you at this time?

Take a moment to think about your own journey of faith. The disciple bends down to the wonder of the line wrappings in the empty tomb. How does this speak to you, only a few days after bowing down to the wonder of swaddling clothes in a manger?

As you listen to the reading again, notice what stays with you and stirs you…

‘He saw and he believed’. Ask the Lord, in prayer, to help you to ‘see’, to bring to your life what is needed.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
