The First Sunday of Advent 2021

Today is Sunday the 28 November, the 1
st Sunday of Advent.

Salt of the Sound sing, ‘Come Thou Long Expected Jesus’.

Today’s reading is from the Prophet Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 33:14-16

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”

Today we begin to celebrate Advent, the season preparing to greet the birth of Jesus at Christmas. What are you especially hoping for in these coming weeks?

The readings of Advent are full of promises. This passage offers a promise of “justice and righteousness in the land”. What’s your own first response on hearing that promise from God?

We’re told that “Jerusalem will live in safety”. Big cities can often feel like unsafe places. What’s it like for you to feel that you’re living in safety?

As you hear this promise read again, notice how God is going to bring it to fulfilment.

Speak to God for a moment, as this time of prayer comes to an end, of how you might prepare for Christmas in the days ahead.
