Monday 15 November 2021

Today is Monday the 15 November, in the 33rd week of Ordinary Time.

The monks of the Abbey of Keur Moussa sing Aveugle de Coeur: “Blind in heart since my birth, I come to you, Light of the world…. Let me live as a child of light”
As I listen, I ask the Lord to open my eyes to what he wants me to see.
I ask God to shine his light into my life.

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Luke.

Luke 18:35-43
As he approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard a crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him,
Jesus of Nazareth[
a] is passing by.” Then he shouted,
Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who were in front sternly ordered him to be quiet; but he shouted even more loudly,
Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stood still and ordered the man to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him,
What do you want me to do for you?” He said,
Lord, let me see again.” Jesus said to him,
Receive your sight; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, praised God.

Today we meet Jesus in Jericho, the lowest city on earth.
A blind man cries out for help. We witness Jesus lifting him to new heights as he restores his sight.
What low places have you experienced in your life recently?
How has Jesus lifted you, rescued you before?

Difficult things are happening in the world; sometimes there is so much we don’t understand or that remains hidden…as if we cannot see; we are in the dark. The blind man trusts Jesus can help him. How have you learnt to trust Jesus in situations where you cannot see a way forward, or feel you keep stumbling?

As you listen to the reading again, ask God to open your eyes, to see Jesus as the healer, restorer in the things that disturb and trouble you…

As this time of prayer, comes to a close, imagine you are the blind person sitting on the roadside. What cry rises out of your inner darkness or the darkness of the world? Know that Jesus hears your cry and bring it to him now.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
