Today is Wednesday the 6 October, in the 27th week of Ordinary time.

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Luke.
 


Luke 11:1-4


He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.’ He said to them, ‘When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be your name.
   Your kingdom come.
   Give us each day our daily bread.
   And forgive us our sins,
     for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
   And do not bring us to the time of trial.’

Luke’s gospel is a gospel of prayer. We see Jesus in prayer many times, it seems natural and both nourishes and encourages Jesus in his ministry. How does this reflect in your prayer life?

The disciples will have known lots of prayers and there are even more now. The disciples are not asking for another set of prayers- they want to know how to pray. How to pray so that the prayer deepens the relationship and brings them closer to the Father.
 

The Lord’s prayer, in Luke, is not a formula to learn by heart – even as we now say it. The Lord’s prayer – spoken by heart – is often the response to a time of need or connection. Reflect on a time when it has had great meaning for you.
 

Listen to the reading again and recognise the themes within the prayer.
 

When you have time, pray these verses again, inviting the Lord to guide you as you meditate on each one and enter into those that hold particular meaning for you.
 


Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
