Today is Thursday the 22 July, the Feast of St Mary Magdalen.

Today’s reading is from Psalm 62.

Psalm 62: 1-4

For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be shaken. How long will you assail a person, will you batter your victim, all of you, as you would a leaning wall, a tottering fence? Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence. They take pleasure in falsehood; they bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse.

Waiting in silence for God can be very prayerful. It is our whole self that prays not just our lips, or our words. To want to be there with God is prayer. Do you want to be with God in your present situation, where you are now? God is there with you.

God is all around us. St Ignatius suggests that when we prepare to pray, we pause to realise that God is looking at us lovingly. So perhaps now, quietly let God love you.

God invites our trust and wants us to feel safe.

“My rock, my salvation, my fortress”—doesn’t that sound like a place of safety? As you hear these words again, notice what feelings stir in you.

Do you feel there are people in your life trying to get you, enjoying telling falsehoods about you? Let God be your rock, your salvation, your fortress. Can you trust God, just as he asks, and see how he responds?

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
