Today is Sunday the 28 February, the second Sunday in Lent.

Today’s reading is from St Paul’s letter to the Romans.

Romans 8:31-34

What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else?Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.

Paul here plays with the image of Christians being on trial. Many of those who heard his words would have had that experience, or would have it in the future. It’s much less common for most of us. But “if God is for us, who can be against us” – how does that sound for you?

This passage, like one that we heard a few days ago, insists that God will undoubtedly give us everything that we need. Do you hear that with gratitude, or disbelief, or what?

In this court-room drama, Jesus is the one pleading on our behalf. What might Jesus say about you as he speaks in your favour?

As you listen again, try to see why Paul is so confident in what he’s saying here.
