St Charles Borromeo

Today is Wednesday the 4 November, the feast of  St Charles Borromeo, in the 31st week of Ordinary Time.

One Hope Project sings, ‘Good Work in Me’. Are you aware of the work God is doing in you, right at this very moment.

Today’s reading is from St Paul’s letter to the Philippians.

Philippians 2:12-18

Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.   Do all things without murmuring and arguing, so that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the world. It is by your holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of Christ that I did not run in vain or labour in vain. But even if I am being poured out as a libation over the sacrifice and the offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you— and in the same way you also must be glad and rejoice with me.

St Paul tells the people of Philippi “It is God who is at work in you”. Where do you recognise God at work in your own life?

He also speaks of them shining like stars in a crooked world. How far do you find the truth of that image reflected in your own life?

As you hear the passage again, notice what it is that leads Paul to be glad and rejoice.

At the heart of this reading is an invitation to “hold fast to the word of life”. As this time of prayer draws to a close, ask God for whatever you need to help you to hold fast in this way.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
