Tuesday 3 November 2020

Today is Tuesday the 3 November, in the 31st week of Ordinary Time.

Maximillian sings, ‘Redemption’. Take a moment to enter into Christ’s loving presence as you begin to pray today.

Today’s reading is from St Paul’s letter to the Philippians.

Philippians 2:5-11

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God,    did not regard equality with God    as something to be exploited, but emptied himself,    taking the form of a slave,    being born in human likeness. And being found in human form,    he humbled himself    and became obedient to the point of death—    even death on a cross.   Therefore God also highly exalted him    and gave him the name    that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus    every knee should bend,    in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess    that Jesus Christ is Lord,    to the glory of God the Father.

This is a passage in two halves. In the first, the Son of God becomes human, assumes the condition of a slave, and even dies a painful, shameful death. Are you able to come to any sense of what that must have been like for Jesus?

In the second half of the passage, God the Father raises Jesus on high, bringing him back to his rightful place. What does it mean to you to speak of Jesus Christ as Lord?   The passage opens by saying “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus”.

As you listen again, notice what it means for you to share the mind of Christ, as it is revealed here.

Speak to God for a moment or two about any ways in which you might need to empty yourself, so as to be able to serve god more fully.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
