Tuesday 6 October 2020

Today is Tuesday the 6 October, in the twenty-seventh week of Ordinary Time.

Salt of the Sound sings, ‘Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus’. Begin to turn your own gaze upon Jesus now… and in turn, let Jesus gaze upon you with love…

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Luke.

Luke 10:38-42

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman called Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."

“Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things.”  Am I worried or distracted now? Where are my heart and my thoughts now, as I try to pray?

Mary is doing what is needed: she is listening to the word of God as it is spoken to her.  Can I hear Jesus say to me: “you have need of only one thing”?  What is the one thing that is needed in my life at the moment?

As you listen to the reading again, picture yourself in the scene, in the home of Martha and Mary. What is the Lord saying to them?  To you?

If I fail to notice God’s presence in my life, and miss the opportunity of hearing God’s word by being busy with other things, worried, distracted…  can I ask the Lord for help?  Can I ask God to help me listen to his word, to help me hear whenever he speaks to me?

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
