The Transfiguration | Thursday 6 August 2020

Today is Thursday the 6 August, the feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord, in the 18th week of Ordinary Time.

The monks of Pluscarden Abbey sing Assumpsit Jesus: ‘Jesus took Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, and he was transfigured in front of them.’  

Today’s reading is from the Second Letter of Peter       

2 Peter 1:16-19

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.  

Today is the feast of the Transfiguration.  It celebrates God’s revelation of Jesus who comes to fulfil the Law and the prophets.  In the passage, Peter gives witness to this Jesus and calls him Christ, and God’s Son, and God’s Beloved.  That’s who Jesus is for Peter... Who is Jesus for you?  Tell him 

And who are you for Jesus? Let him tell you

Jesus seems to have had these special occasions where he experienced God’s particular love for him.  Can you sense how important this was for Jesus?

The writer refers to a lamp shining in a dark place.  What is bringing you life and light in these days?
