Today is Wednesday the 20 May, in the 6th week of Easter.

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of John.

John 16:12-15

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Jesus is speaking at the Last Supper.  His words are enigmatic: ‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now’.  His disciples are too caught up with the pain of the moment of saying goodbye.  There’s only so much reality they can bear.  Jesus knows this and reassures them that the process of faith takes time.  He also promises to send ‘the Spirit of truth’. 

Are there any truths about my relationship with Jesus that I shy away from?  Do I cling to safe fantasies while God is trying to lead me towards a truth that is challenging?  There certainly is a challenge in this reading for the disciples but also for us.  Do I feel an invitation to move and grow in some aspect of my life in Christ?

As we listen again to the reading, can you feel the reassurance of Jesus as well as the challenge? 

What does it feel like to hear him promise that all that he has will be given to you?  What are the gifts of the Spirit that you desire at this time? I take a moment now to ask the Lord for these…
