Today is Monday, the 20th of January, in the Second Week of Ordinary Time.

The Sons of the Korah sing Psalm 1. “Blessed is the man who does not walk, in the counsel of the wicked.”

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Mark.

There are a number of evocative images in this text – a wedding, an old cloak, wine in bursting skins.  Which of Jesus’s images stays with you?  Which one might have something to say to you?

Take the image that speaks most strongly to you, and stay with it for a few moments, pondering Jesus’s description of it … fasting after a wedding, of a cloak tearing or of wine skins bursting.  What do you notice about the message Jesus is offering the Pharisees?

As you listen a second time, let your imagination enter into the scene, considering the reactions of the listeners as they hear Jesus teaching.

Take a few minutes now to enter into conversation with Jesus about what you have noticed as you listened to his words and pondered his images.  What do you want to ask of Jesus in the light of this reading?
