Today is Friday the 11th of July, the Feast of St Benedict.

The monks of Pluscarden Abbey sing, Ecce quam bonum: “ How good and how pleasant it is when brothers and sisters live together in unity!  It is like precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.”

Today’s reading is from the Book of Proverbs.

As this reading describes the quality of wisdom, does it bring to mind anyone you know?  Does it remind you of anyone you think of as wise?  Think about that person for a moment.  What is it about them that you like or admire?  How does wisdom show itself in them?

As you hold that person and their qualities in your mind, do you feel a desire to have more of those qualities yourself?

Listen again, to the ways the Lord describes of growing in wisdom and understanding.

Can I ask the Lord now for those gifts?... and receive the understanding and wisdom that the Lord has to give me?
