Seven Last Words

Welcome to our Lent Retreat for 2017.

This year, we will be following the book Seven Last Words by Father James Martin, a Jesuit priest and bestselling author who lives in New York City. His book is a meditation on the last phrases Jesus uttered on the Cross and Fr Martin's beautiful reflective writing shows us how completely Jesus understands us, and how we can turn to Jesus in every situation in our life.

Seven Last Words is used with the kind permission of HarperOne. You can purchase the book here >>>

It is our hope that through the extracts taken from this book, you will come to see Jesus in a new light, and enter into a deeper relationship with him.

Please Note: We release sessions once a week (see dates provided below).

Introduction

Session 1 - "Father, forgive them"

Do you find it difficult to forgive? In this session, we will examine Jesus' forgiveness on the cross and what that means in our own lives.

This week's session is based on Chapter 1 of Fr. James Martin's book, 'Seven Last Words' and is used with the kind permission of HarperOne. Purchase >>>

Session 2 - "Today you will be with me in Paradise."

Doubt, particularly regarding the afterlife, is something we all wrestle with at some point during our journey of faith. This session will look at Jesus' soothing words spoken from the cross, and elsewhere in the Gospels.

This week's session is based on Chapter 2 of Fr. James Martin's book, 'Seven Last Words' and is used with the kind permission of HarperOne. Purchase >>>

Session 3 - "Woman...this is your son."

In this session, we turn our attention to Mary. Perhaps you normally think of her as the Queen of Heaven, the Mother of God. But we will turn our thinking to Miriam, a woman living in a backwater village in Galilee called Nazareth.

This week's session is based on Chapter 3 of Fr. James Martin's book, 'Seven Last Words' and is used with the kind permission of HarperOne. Purchase >>>

Session 4 - "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Did Jesus give up hope when he was crucified? Did he despair when he was on the cross? In this session, we reflect on Jesus' words of abandonment by God. Have you ever felt this way?

This week's session is based on Chapter 4 of Fr. James Martin's book, 'Seven Last Words' and is used with the kind permission of HarperOne. Purchase >>>

Session 5 - "I thirst"

Jesus had a body. Everything proper to the human body, he experienced - except sin. Quite a few people have a difficult time accepting Jesus' humanity. How does reflecting on this make you feel?

This week's session is based on Chapter 5 of Fr. James Martin's book, 'Seven Last Words' and is used with the kind permission of HarperOne. Purchase >>>

Session 6 - "It is finished."

Think about the days, months and years that Jesus poured into his ministry. How do you hear the words 'it is finished' from Jesus as he hangs on the cross? How do you imagine the scene?

Session 7 - "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."

Giving ourselves entirely to God means surrendering to the future God has in store for us. How to you regularly give yourself over to God?
